HOPE SPRINGS ETERNAL
As a people, have we lost our sense of hope? Surely it is better to live fully in hope than to half live in fear!
The message of the Ascension is full of hope. Jesus assures us that there is a place prepared for us with Him in heaven, a place of welcome. The Ascension is our salvation as well. We are reminded of the glory we hope to share with Him every time we see the Paschal Candle lighting or recognise Him in the breaking of bread.
We might feel afraid, weighed down by life's cares and unable to carry on, but He has not abandoned us and He is sending His Holy Spirit. We have His word.
"I am with you always; yes to the end of time". Mt 28:20
âCELEBRATING THE ASCENSION (A Gospel reflection) For many people, the feast of the Ascension was a full holiday in the middle of May. With good weather, the day could have given us great memories of freedom from school and a real first sense of summer being with us. Of course a wet and windy May often disappointed our hopes, but the celebrations nevertheless went ahead. The movement to change the celebration from Thursday to Sunday began in West Europe as people more and more did not wish to lose a day's work in midweek during May, especially as May 1st was so close at hand, and this day had come to be an almost universal âworkers' day'. All of these observations are by way of introducing the central point that we are still reminded to celebrate the Ascension as one of the great feasts of the Church's calendar. What we celebrate is the completion of Christ's work of saving us from ourselves through our sins, and making the kingdom of God a reality to be sought. We can also think of the Ascension as the Father's seal of approval on the work of Jesus as our Redeemer. What is more important for us is that we realise that our own personal journey towards God's kingdom is incomplete and that we must keep going. In our struggle to follow the Gospel and live like Jesus, we find hope and encouragement in celebrating the Ascension. Where Christ has gone, we will surely follow and we are asked to make our home in Him as he has made His home in us. Today let us rejoice in the Ascension and the call of God to share in His Kingdom.
