John the Baptist

John the Baptist was a ‘servant of the Lord chosen and called to serve God.  John's mission was ‘to prepare the way for the Lord'.  He proclaimed a ‘'baptism of repentance' for the people of Israel in preparation for the coming of the Messiah Jesus Christ.  John suffered a martyr's death for his heroic moral principles, in condemning  King Herod's adulterous marriage with his brother's wife Herodias.
Jesus paid tribute to John when he said,
‘Among those born of women there has arisen no one greater than John the Baptist.'  Of course, Jesus is superior, as John himself declared: ‘He who comes after me, ranks before me, and I am not worthy to undo his sandle strap'.

Friends in your life are like pillars on your porch: Sometimes they hold you up; sometimes they lean on you; sometimes its just enough to know they're standing by.

A MOMENT OF GREAT TRUTH.....

When John the Baptist had been circumcised as accounted in today's Gospel, his father recovered the power of speech which had been taken away from him when he doubted the word of the Archangel Gabriel.  His first words reflect a sense of joy and a sense of the truth of the moment that is rarely to be found elsewhere in the Gospel.  Zechariah spoke the Benedictus -the great Canticle of praise to God for his goodness, and a sense that in this moment the beginnings of the salvation story are unfolding.
‘Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel for he has visited his people, he has come to their rescue and he has raised up for us a power for salvation in the House of his servant David, even as he proclaimed, by the mouth of his holy prophets from ancient times, that he would save us from our enemies and from the hands of all who hate us.  Thus he shows mercy to our ancestors, thus he remembers his holy covenant the oath he swore to our father Abraham that he would grant us, free from fear, to be delivered from the hands of our enemies,
to serve him in holiness and virtue in his presence, all our days.  And you, little child, you shall be called Prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the Lord to prepare the way for him.  To give his people knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of their sins;this by the tender mercy of our God who from on high will bring the rising Sun to visit us, to give light to those who live in darkness and the shadow of death and to guide our feet into the way of peace.'

We can all reflect on this beautiful Canticle, and make it our own prayer.  In doing so we come to thank God for his goodness to us, and his boundless love.  It has never been expressed more beautifully than by Zechariah

A PRAYER FOR PEACE

O loving God,
We remember the injured who fight for their life,
We remember the captives who yearn for freedom,
We remember the deportees who long for the homeland.
We remember towns, villages and camps that are often under siege.
We remember the children whose eyes reflect the light of the future,
We remember the brave who say "no" to injustice,
We lift the olive branch which says "yes' to a just peace

O God, we call upon you to grant us your patience, determination and power so that we may say:

No to hate and yes to love,
No to death and yes to life,
No to falsehood and yes to truth
No to oppression and yes to justice,
No to cruelty and yes to mercy,
No to violence and yes to the path of peace,
No, no matter what it may cost, and yes, no matter what it may cost.
For you are the source of love leading to reconciliation and forgiveness.
