“I AM WITH YOU ALWAYS”With that reassurance He leaves them on the mountain: by word, sight, taste and touch He has confirmed their faith in His Resurrection and in the fact that He is the same Jesus they knew and lived with. Yes, they saw and heard Him, touched His wounds and tasted the breakfast He cooked for them. But now - a cloud is taking Him from their sight. They are bereft of their secure sensory experience. It is belief without seeing. In this experience of bereavement and weakness He tells them to continue His mission. They are to rely on the Spirit He will send. In, through and with their weaknesses His Spirit will continue to convert them, enabling them to show the compassionate love of the Father for all people. Have we ourselves faith when our feelings desert us, and we think we can’t pray; to trust that Jesus is calling us to a deeper level of intimacy with Himself, so that we too may better reveal His Father’s love whatever the time, place or circumstances in which we find ourselvs ?
Generosity is not in giving me that which I need more than you do, but it is in giving me that which you need more than I do. Kahill Gibran

Time is too slow for those who wait, too swift for those who fear, too long for those who grieve, too short for those who rejoice, but for those who love, time is eternity.
THREE LITTLE WORDSSunday’s Gospel (Matt 28:16-20) puts me in mind of a tongue-in-cheek Irish invention: an inflatable dartboard! For if ever an author seems to score an own goal it is Matthew today. To believe in life after death is difficult enough. To believe that a specific man rose from the dead, lived among us afterwards, then ascended into heaven is gobsmacking. At least, it should be. Therefore, you’d think that Matthew would help us to believe in Jesus’ resurrection. But no! Au contraire! He sneaks in three little words: ‘but some doubted’. Now, how could anyone - knowing that Jesus had died on a cross, yet seeing him before their very eyes - possibly doubt? What did they doubt: their own eyes, that the man before them was Jesus, that he had truly died, or what? Matthew doesn’t say. Interestingly, these doubters don’t go away. Jesus commissions them too, it seems. Doubt isn’t an obstacle to the mission of making disciples of all nations. And what a relief that is! You don’t now it all. You don’t have to be rock-hard certain of everything. You can doubt and follow, perhaps even lead. Your doubting can make you seek out Jesus, until you find him. Matthew’s own-goal is actually his winning strike. Thank you, Matthew, for those three little words. (Fr Tom Cahill, Intercom May 08)
