TEMPTATIONThe Gospel’s opening line says it was the Spirit who led Jesus into the desert and allowed the devil to put Him to the test.Experience tells us how easily we can be tempted, but we are not bereft of free will. Nonetheless, each of us has a specific area where temptation is so seductive that we need help stronger than our own resources to resist it. The Spirit of God, whose power is greater than our minds can grasp, is close and waiting to help. We need to ask for it though - He will not impose on our free will. This is where a personally chosen Lenten discipline can “firm us up”. Apart from a curtailment of food or drink, one could also exact from oneself a specific ten minutes a day to use the Sunday Gospel to see what the Word of Jesus is saying to me personally in my own life, and each morning we could invoke the Holy Spirit saying: “and through all perils keep us safe, beneath thy Sacred Wing”.
With God’s strength behind you, His love with you and His arms underneath you, you are more than sufficient for the days ahead of you.
LOURDES February 11th marks the 150th anniversary of the beginning of the apparitions of Our Lady of Lourdes to St Bernadette. It is also World Day of the Sick. To mark the feast day, there will be Mass, candle light rosary and benediction for all who are sick and recovering in the parish. The ceremonies begin at 7.30pm. The story of Lourdes is one of great hope. We are reminded that the saints are close to us, and the first of all saints is our Blessed Mother Mary. She told St Bernadette “I cannot promise to make you happy in this life, but in the next!” We unite our prayers with the millions of pilgrims who travel to Our Lady’s shrine in Lourdes in faith and hope each year. There is a plenary indulgence attached to the feast day. Details of this are published at Our Lady’s statue in the Church.
ADMINISTRATION GROUP Meeting, Wednesday 13th at 8.00pm, Parochial House. LENT - PREPARING FOR EASTER MASSES: Tullamore - Monday-Friday 7.30am, 10.00am & 7.30pm; Durrow - Fridays 8.00pm. EVENING PRAYER Sundays, 5.30pm, Church of the Assumption. STATIONS OF THE CROSS Monday-Friday 9.40am, Church of the Assumption. EXPOSITION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT Fridays, after 7.30pm Mass. CONFESSIONS before Vigil Mass, Saturdays 6.45-7.15pm. SOMETHING FOR THE KIDS! Most people don’t hear about Lent, Easter,God, Christ,Heaven, etc for the first time at Mass. We don’t start off our faith in the church. We learn about it at home. If you think back, did you ever hear a priest tell you when you were young that you should “give up something” for Lent. We learned all this at home - the first school of faith. Tell your children how great God is and all He has done for us in Jesus! Tell them all about Lent and what we’re going to celebrate at the end of it. Even if they are grown up, away and married, tell them that because they are God’s wonderful children, life is worth living! Remember, if they don’t darken the door of the Church, where else will they hear it except from you?
