“BELOVED”

What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the word “beloved”?  Warm, tender feeling?  Sweet, cuddly little baby? Your spouse on your wedding day? Kind, selfless parents?  Good siblings?  Trusted friend?

Baptism is about sharing in Christ’s identity as “God’s beloved Son”.  That is why Jesus was born and became one of us.
God wants us to be aware of a love that expresses itself in action.  What any good parent does to a baby is an action of God.  But a parent’s responsibility doesn’t end in the baby’s baptism.  Jesus, as a human person, was baptised and parented just like us.  He was loved, not spoiled.  He was taught to give not just to receive, and more.  Being God’s beloved is a gift.  And what we do with this gift is what we give back to God.

Today, as we renew our baptismal vows, let us own and make true God’s word to Jesus, “You are my one beloved son/daughter.  I am pleased with you.” (Luke 3:22)

If you see no reason for giving thanks,
the fault lies in yourself.

BAPTISM OF THE LORD

The Baptism day is the day the call is given. The identity is revealed. Here is my beloved Son. This is who He is. From that moment he moves out among the people with the news of salvation. He lives a life of worship, healing, praying, bring peace, proclaiming news of happiness, raising the dead, forgiving sinners and bringing good news to the poor. At our Baptism, we are joined to him and called to bring his light and life to the world.

As Pope Benedict said this week: ‘How important it is for we Christians to remain faithful to our vocation. All true believers are always traveling along their own personal itinerary of faith and at the same time, with the little light that each of them carries within, they can and must help those whom they encounter and who perhaps are struggling to find the path that leads to Christ".
