REPENT For the Kingdom of Heaven is close at handIn today’s Gospel reading, John the Baptist calls on us to repent of our sins in preparation for the kingdom of heaven.
John tells us to: ‘prepare a way for the Lord’; in other words, get ready for the coming of ‘the Messiah Jesus Christ, who will baptise us with the Holy Spirit and fire.’
As we prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus, our Saviour, let us pray that we may all be reconciled with God and with each other, during this season of Advent. The Sacrament of Reconciliation at all Masses on Sunday 23rd, will afford an excellent opportunity for us to be reconciled with God.
God will only carry those Who allow Him to carry them.
FINDING PEACE OR KEEPING THE PEACE What will Christmas be like for you this year? Will you spend it on your own or will you be in the company of friends or family? Are you doing something that you enjoy or are you enduring family ‘traditions’ for the sake of keeping the peace? ‘Keeping the peace’ is not the same as living in harmony. Harmony comes from relationships based on honesty, acceptance and respect for differences. In contrast when we try to ‘keep the peace’ we hide our true thoughts and feelings. Simmering quietly below the surface of our relationships feelings emerge unchecked in tenser moments; the family Christmas fight becomes as much an expected tradition as the Christmas roast. If ‘keeping the peace’ is not bringing you the peace you seek this Christmas, don’t shuffle on in silence. Talk with your friends or family about what they expect from Christmas. However short, an honest and respectful conversation can go a long way to making Christmas easier and more peaceful for everyone.
EVENING PRAYER FOR ADVENT Continues today, Sunday 9th, at 5.30pm
PRAYER Lord, I can feel under pressure at Christmas to respond to the expectations of others. Help me to make wise responses, to be honest and respectful, to do your will. Help me to find the peace that comes from being myself and having the courage to voice my needs and opinions. Let me create more harmony in my world by respecting the different needs and views of the people I meet. Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
