THE GOOD SHEPHERDJesus the Good Shepherd tells us that: “He has come so that we may have life and have it to the full”. On this Vocations Sunday, Jesus calls young people in particular, to consider offering their services in spreading the good news of salvation. During the past century the call was for missionary work in foreign lands. Sadly, today, the great need is for young men to answer the call to the priesthood, to assist in the re-evangelisation of our own people, many of whom appear to have abandoned their faith in our materialistic society. As we thank God for the wonderful generosity of the priests of our own parish in answering the call of Jesus; let us pray that more young men will follow their great example.
Handle them carefully, for words have more power than atom bombs.

THE DEEP END - LIFE: FULL AND FREE
When I worked in Indonesia as a missionary, a priest friend one day introduced a Chinese friend of his to me in the following manner: ‘This is so-and-so. He’s not Christian yet, he’s still free’. I couldn’t believe my ears. How could anyone think that being a Christian limited your freedom? Now, my friend may have thought he was being funny or subtle, but if so it was lost on me. But his words did strike home. I wonder how many people actually think that religion cramps their style. And I also wonder what such people would want to do that they couldn’t do by being a Christian - particularly in the light of today’s Gospel (Jn 10:1-10) where Jesus tells us that he has come to bring life in all its fullness. However, it doesn’t come prepacked. It has to be worked on and worked with. Living as Jesus wants us to, leads to a full life. His Way is a precious gift, not a wearisome burden. It frees, it doesn’t enslave. But all the talk in the world won’t convince anybody, if we who are on that Way, don’t show its fullness in our life through joy, maturity, generosity, courage and hope. I’ve learned that life sometimes gives you a second chance. I’ve learned that you shouldn’t go through life with a catcher’s mitt on both hands; you need to be able to throw some things back. I’ve learned that whenever I decide something with an open heart, I usually make the right decision. I’ve learned that even when I have pains, I don’t have to be one. I’ve learned that every day you should reach out and touch someone. People love a warm hug, or just a friendly pat on the back. I’ve learned that I still have a lot to learn. I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”
