SPREADING THE WORD OF GOD

• On Vocations Sunday, the scripture readings emphasise the importance of spreading the Word of God.

• Jesus the Good Shepherd, who laid down his life for us is risen and tells us that those who belong to him, listen to his voice and follow him.

• The people of Antioch assembled at the synagogue to hear the word of God, but rejected it.  Hence Paul and Barnabas, having preached about Jesus to the Jewish people first, were forced to proclaim the Gospel to the pagans instead, as commanded by the Lord:

• â€˜I have made you a light for the nations, so that my salvation may reach the ends of the earth.'

• With the decline in vocations to the priesthood, the laity are called, not only to listen to the word of God, but to help in making the Good News of Salvation known to others.
