“THE CHURCH IS HOME TO EVERYONE”

The Shepherd King

Are we reaching out in love and friendship to live today’s Gospel message of feeding the hungry; welcoming the stranger; looking after the sick; endless acts of service to our neighbour and community?
Are we givers or receivers; sharing our God-given gifts or grasping at everything within reach; showing by our actions what it means to be a follower of Christ and heir to His Kingdom?  The Shepherd King’s love for us was so great that He came among us to experience for Himself what being human was really like, including death.
If we want to find Him today we will discover Him in the sufferings of every human family; in the daily struggles of life; in places of conflict and where people seek peace, “until He has put all His enemies under His feet”, (1 Cor.15:25)
As we “welcome back” family members and friends today, let us look to Exekiel for messages of hope; “I myself will search for my sheep...I will rescue them...I will bring them into their own land...I myself will tend my sheep...I will search for the lost and bring back the strays...I will bind up my injured.” (Exek. 11,12,13,16 & 16)

Today is the feast of Christ the King.  He is not the king of thrones and jewels, he is the King of Love, who calls us to come to him.  No matter how we see ourselves, despite our failings and regrets he constantly calls us close to him. George Herbert sums up this epic story in his poem Love.
Love bade me welcome, yet my soul drew back, Guilty of dust and sin.
But quick-ey'd Love, observing me grow slack, From my first entrance in,
Drew nearer to me, sweetly questioning
If I lack'd anything.

"A guest," I answer'd, "worthy to be here";
Love said, "You shall be he."
"I, the unkind, the ungrateful? ah my dear,
I cannot look on thee."
Love took my hand and smiling did reply,
"Who made the eyes but I?"

"Truth, Lord, but I have marr'd them; let my shame, Go where it doth deserve."
"And know you not," says Love, "who bore the blame?"
"My dear, then I will serve."
"You must sit down," says Love, "and taste my meat.”
