A PERSONAL INVITATION

Sunday, God invites us to a banquet - the best wedding banquet ever, where there is a place for everyone.
No one is excluded!  Only He would be so generous as to lavish on us His unconditional love.
He expects a response from us.  How could we possibly refuse such an invitation?
What if we do not answer?  Will we choose not to wear the wedding garment like one of the guests in today’s Gospel?
God calls us to prepare in our daily lives for the banquet prepared for all; to come to the Eucharistic Banquet on Sundays, for example, which some choose to ignore.
Will He say of us: “the wedding banquet is ready, but the invited guests were not worthy” (Matt 22:8)
He asks us to co-operate with His plan whatever our situation in life, trusting that He is with us and will be our strength.
“Come to the wedding banquet” (Matt 22:5

CHERRY PICKERS BEWARE!

A street-wise and disarmingly down-to-earth Christian Brother once told his second-year students, “the first miracle Jesus worked was to make booze!”  Not a particularly reverential way of referring to the miracle of Cana.  But true, nonetheless.  Put that way it could be a stumbling stone for inter-faith dialogue.
You’ll find more stumbling stones in Sunday’s Gospel.  Take the bit about bringing both the good and the bad to the wedding feast.  Doesn’t seem to matter whether you’re good or bad, does it?  Let me know if you do.
Anyway, everyone seems to be invited, and not very formally either.  It’s almost as if they’re put on the spot in the street.  Here’s the invitation.  Take it or leave it.  Its up to you.  What a godsend for freeloaders, cherry pickers and opportunists!
But wait.  There is a sting in the tail.  One of these, let’s say the cherry picker, who ‘answers the call’ hasn’t done his homework.  Life has ground rules - and that’s the most basic one of all.  Poor fellow!  He saunters in without a care in the world and what happens?  He’s out on his ear before he knows it.  The reason?  His dress code.  Nothing to do with him being good or bad.
Though come to think of it, flouting social morals can indicate arrogance, selfishness or stupidity.  Flouting religious ones can indicate the same.
Whichever.  Cherry pickers of the world be warned.  You’re on note!
