THE MYSTERY OF THE CROSS No one who will read this today will never have experienced suffering. It may have been in a small way, such as anxiety of worry; or it may be something much greater, such as long term illness and pain. I read somewhere that the real cross is the one I have not chosen; the one that does not fit neatly on my shoulder. The Lord asks us not to run away from crosses but to use them as opportunities for growth. “Take up your cross daily and follow me” (Matt 16:24). Bearing ones cross is not a selfish thing to do but enables us to better feel for those whose life is a cross. We lead by example and Jesus has already shown the way. As St Paul warns us, we “must model ourselves on the behaviour of the world around us” (Rm 12:2). “Compassion is not learned without suffering”. (Thomas Merton)
A life spent making mistakes is not only more honourable but more useful than a life spent doing nothing. -- George Bernard Shaw
