THE CALL TO DISCIPLESHIP

The Book of Samuel and the gospel deal with the ‘call’ to discipleship and the response.  The call of Samuel is a wonderful story to reflect on at the beginning of a new year.  His response to his call is an example of the perfect prayer of a true disciple.  We must be attentive to the voice of God whether it comes in the darkness of uncertainty or in our everyday experiences.  We have to discern the voice of the Spirit in our often hectic daily lives.

Placed alongside this story is the call of Andrew in the gospel.  Having been baptised by John the Baptist, Jesus was beginning to attract and gather followers.  Initially they sought out Jesus primarily because of the preaching and the witness of John the Baptist.  Andrew, while standing with John, heard him exclaim “Look, there is the Lamb of God” and Andrew followed Jesus who in turn asked him “What are you looking for?”  How might we respond to that question?  What does Jesus mean to us and how does our living reflect His message?  We can learn from the ‘call stories’.  Remember we are never called for our own sake but to help and serve others.  To be called doesn’t require perfection only fidelity.  Samuel, Andrew, Simon Peter and even the tax collectors were not called because of their achievements, status or qualifications.  The journey of discipleship doesn’t require anything more than a willing heart.  Have you a willing heart?

VOCATIONS

Come and See:  The theme of vocation stands out in the biblical Readings of this Sunday, the Second in Ordinary Time.  In the Gospel, there is the call to the first disciples by Jesus; in the First Reading is the call of the Prophet Samuel.  In the forefront of both these accounts, is the importance of the figure who plays the role of mediator, helping people to recognize God’s voice and to follow it.  May we help others to see their call and in particular, help young men to be priests for Christ in our Diocese.

WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY

Prayer service in Tullamore Methodist Church, on Sunday January 14th at 7.00pm.
All are welcome.

SEEING YOUR LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS  Mark 1:7-11

John pointed the disciples towards Jesus as the one they should follow.  Remember the people in your life who have pointed you in a new and life-giving direction?  Perhaps in some cases this may have involved directing you away from your association with them, e.g., leaving home, changing jobs, etc.

Where do you live?  Jesus did not respond to the question by giving the disciples his address.  He invited them to come and experience where and how he lived.  Discipleship is a lived experience.  What experiences have helped you to learn how Jesus lived, and what he was looking for in life?  How has this attracted you to follow him?

What is your experience of gathering in small groups to learn to live like Jesus by listening to the gospel together?  Where two or three are gathered in his name, Jesus is there with them.  What group experiences have helped your faith to grow?

Andrew did not keep the good news to himself but also invited his brother to join him in following Jesus.  What is your experience of receiving, or giving, an invitation to join in some worthwhile venture?

A PRAYER FOR THE NEW YEAR

Dear Lord, please give me…

A few friends who understand me and remain my friends; work to do which has real
value, without which the world would be the poorer; a mind unafraid to travel, even though the trail be not blazed; an understanding heart; a sense of humour; time
for quiet, silent meditation; a feeling of the presence of God; the patience to wait
for the coming of these things, with the wisdom to recognise them when they come.
