CONFESSIONS Saturday 2.00-3.00pm in the Day Chapel. SEEING YOUR LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS Matthew 5:1-12 We are told that Jesus ‘fixed his eyes on the disciples’ before speaking. It suggests that he was about to say something that he really wanted them to take in. Surprisingly he then tells them it is no bad thing for us to be poor or hungry. But perhaps you have recognised the truth in what St Augustine said ‘You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you.’ ‘Blessed are you who weep’ is not an encouragement to be miserable. Rather it is an affirmation of the importance of loving relationships in life. We are blessed to have such people in our lives, but there may also be pain. Yet is it not true that the blessing of loving and being loved is worth the price you pay? Jesus said that his followers would be open to opposition and ridicule because of him – and they are blessed when this happens. Unpleasant it may be, but have you not been grateful on those occasions when you had the courage to stand by something that you believed in? (John Byrne osa, Intercom Jan 23) CANDLEMAS DAY & THE FEAST OF ST BLAISE Thursday 2nd is Candlemas Day. Candles will be blessed at 7.45am & 10.00am Masses. Friday 3rd is the Feast of St Blaise. Blessing of Throats will take place after 7.45am and 10.00am Masses and at 5.30-6.00pm. CONFIRMATION Congratulations to our young people who received the Sacrament of Confirmation this weekend. We acknowledge the great work of so many people in preparing for this Sacrament. We appreciate the commitment of our teachers and schools for their support and professionalism and we acknowledge the central work of parents and guardians in handing on the faith to our children. We should remember to pray for our young people and it is the responsibility and the privilege of the entire Christian Community to share the faith with the next generation. VOCATIONS In the Gospel last Sunday we saw Christ walk into the lives of the fishermen. They had been mending nets, the tools of their work. At His word, they leave everything to follow Him. Being with Jesus becomes the essence of their lives, His person becomes the new net which to cast into the waters of time. The disciples become ministers of His Word. Every call to the Sacred Priesthood occurs when the Lord walks into our lives with His words of invitation, “Follow Me.” He is still inviting young men to cast out the nets of faith today. Being a priest is to be always with and near Jesus and to bring Him to others. Answer his call, cast his nets. Be a priest that will bring many to Jesus.
