RICH MAN, POOR MAN

Today’s Gospel presents us with contrast.  On one hand we have a person of wealth and privilege, and on the other there is Lazarus, a poor jejected beggar, hungry and ignored.  It is a “rich man, poor man” scenario.

However, in today’s world there are similar contrasts.  There are the healthy, able-bodied, intelligent people – people of privilege, and in contrast there are people who have serious chronic illnesses, physical and intellectual disabilities.  There are people who have good secure employment, who have homes, and a sense of  belonging in a place.  There are others who have no work, no homes, who are immigrants and who may never get to feel that they belong here.

What is this parable about?  Perhaps we might consider that Lazarus represents more than the financially poor in society and that the rich man is nameless because he represents you and me.  Whare are we dong to ease the burden of those who are poor, sick, disabed, in flight from their countries, on the margins of our society?  Are we ignoring them as the rich man ignored Lazarus?  Are we prejudiced against them?

The lesson of the parable might be that we should recognise the present-day replicas of Lazarus in our socety, and love them as our neighbours, as much as we love ourselves.

FAMILY MASS

The Family Mass has resumed in the Day Chapel, Sundays at 10.00am.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT

Growing up in Nigeria and going to the seminary to train for the priesthood, I heard a lot about Ireland, and knew a bit about the land of St. Patrick. But I never knew there was any place called Tullamore on the map of the world. Yet providence and the mission of Christ led me to find a home amongst you in the last six years. Sharing the mission of Christ with you, I learnt, I made some mistakes and grew.

Thank you for every encouragement, support and kindness. I will forever carry Tullamore in my heart because you have become a part of my history. Keep me in your prayers as I do same with you. Thank you!

Fr. Luke.

SEEING YOUR LIFE THROUGH LENS OF THE GOSPELS

LUKE 16:19-31

The first of the faults attributed to the rich man is his insensitivity to the abject poverty of those around him. When have you discovered that it is when you are aware of the needs of those around you and seek to make some response that you bring out the best in yourself?

The second fault attributed to the rich man is the way he ignored the word of God coming through Moses and the prophets. How have the gospels, the scriptures or your faith opened you up to a deeper and more satisfying perspective on life?

Some people look to the spectacular for a sign of God’s presence and action. For Jesus the lessons we need are not to be sought in the spectacular, but in the ordinary things of everyday life. Where have you found reminders of God’s presence in the world around you?

‘An authentic faith – which is never comfortable or completely personal – always involves a deep desire to change the world, to transmit values, to leave this earth somehow better that we found it … All Christians, their pastors included, are called to show concern for the building of a better world.’ (Pope Francis, Evangeliigaudium, The Joy of the Gospel, No. 183)

John Byrne, Intercom Sept 2022

IRISH BLESSING FOR THOSE WHO ARE FORCED TO LEAVE HOME ON THIS WORLD DAY OF MIGRANTS & REFUGEES

The love and affection of the angels be to you; the love and affection of the saints be to you; the love and affection of heaven be to you, to guard and cherish you.

May God shield you on every step, may he aid you on every path, and may he hold you safe on every slope, on every hill and on every plain, on the earth and on sea until it is safe to go home again.
