SINNERS' FRIEND

As the song says, "What a friend we have in Jesus", and this is so true in our Gospel story today. We see what happens when sinner (the woman caught in adultery) and mercy (Jesus) meet.

When others condemned, Jesus forgave. When others judged, Jesus was compassionate. When others pointed the finger of accusation, Jesus wrote in the sand.

The mercy of God is calling us back to new life.

Today's Gospel should fill us with courage to let go of the past and open ourselves to an experience of God's love.

"Go now and leave your life of sin". (Jn8:ll)

STATEMENT OF THE SPRING 2022 GENERAL MEETING OF THE IRISH CATHOLIC BISHOPS' CONFERENCE

Welcoming a return to full public worship

During the Season of Lent, we encourage everyone to return to Sunday and weekday Mass in our churches, welcoming each other back as we gather once more together. From Easter Sunday, 17 April, this will once again be deemed an essential expression of faith for all in our Church in Ireland. As always, those whose health is vulnerable or who are unwell will not be under any obligation to attend Mass and should keep themselves safe and pray at home until they are better.

SEEING YOUR LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPEL John 8:1-11

Compassion for human frailty combined with a gentle challenge to a better life marked the response of Jesus. From whom have you experienced a compassionate challenge? What was that like for you? To whom have you given such a challenge?

The Pharisees and scribes self-righteously condemned the woman until Jesus brought them in touch with their own sinfulness. This was a conversion moment for them and they turned away from their quest for the death of the woman. Have there been times when your awareness of your own fragility and sinfulness has helped you to be less judgemental of others?

'What do you say?' can be an embarrassing question. Jesus had the courage to voice an opinion, even though it was against the party line of the day. When have you seen that courage shown - by yourself, or by another? What was the result?
