PENTECOST

Scripture tells us that while the apostles were at prayer with Mary, suddenly there was a roaring wind and the Holy Spirit descended on them in the form of tongues of fire.  It gave these timid and frightened men the courage to rush into       the street and fearlessly preach the word of God to everyone they met.  At that moment the church was born. This has not been a once off happening.  Ever since, the Holy Spirit has been a permanent presence and a strength in guiding and directing the beginning of the church.

This feast brings home to us that God calls us to a deeper relationship with him and wants us to share his life.  It is an invitation to enkindle the fire of love and to stir up the grace of our Baptismal calling.

There are times when we stand in need of the help of the Holy Spirit whose presence will make a difference to our thinking.  The power of the Spirit will come if we ask him.  It is for us to leave the door of our hearts open to invite him in.

With this feast we celebrate the first Birthday of the Church because it was on the first Pentecost Sunday that the infant Church too on its missionary role.

REOPENING OF OUR CHURCHES FOR PUBLIC MASS

It is so strange to have to celebrate Mass in an empty Church. Nobody ever remembers a time like this and we are looking forward to the easing of restrictions so we will be able to come to Mass in our Church again.

It will be very different as we follow social distancing guidelines and good health and hygiene protocols. This church can normally seat over 1000 people. When we follow 2 meter distance guideline the capacity will be reduced to about 180 people. There are going to be big changes and challenges. We are making our preparations for this so as we can open as soon as the national roadmap allows us to do so.

We are making an appeal for help.We need many volunteers. We need volunteers to help in the sanitising of the church after each Mass.We need volunteers to act as stewards at the doors of the church and inside.

If you feel you can help us please let us know. We will put rotas together and it will not be over demanding on anyone.  You can contact us, with your name and contact details by phone or email or at the parish centre.

We need this help so as to be able to reopen our church for Mass.

WHY GO TO CHURCH?

A Church goer wrote a letter to the editor of a newspaper and complained that it made no sense to go to church every Sunday. He wrote: "I've gone for 30 years now, and in that time I have heard something like 3,000 sermons, but for the life of me, I can't remember a single one of them. So, I think I'm wasting my time. The preachers are wasting theirs by giving sermons at all".This started a real controversy in the 'Letters to the Editor' column.

Much to the delight of the editor, it went on for weeks until someone wrote this clincher:

"I've been married for 30 years now. In that time my wife has cooked some 32,000 meals. But, for the life of me, I cannot recall the entire menu for a single one of those meals. But I do know this: They all nourished me and gave me the strength I needed to do my work. If my wife had not given me these meals, I would be physically dead today.Likewise, if I had not gone to church for nourishment, I would be spiritually dead today!"When you are DOWN to nothing, God is UP to something!Faith sees the invisible, believes the incredible, and receives the impossible!Thank God for our physical and our spiritual nourishment!

THE MEMORARE

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession was left unaided. Inspired with this confidence, I fly to thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother; to thee do I come; before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen
