Celebrating the Year of the Eucharist.

At this time, we have come to the end of our First Communion celebrations throughout the parish. We have also celebrated the Feast of the body and Blood of Christ, and held our Annual Procession in honour of the Eucharist. One of the notable aspects of First Communion Celebrations is the very large attendance compared with a generation ago. Attendance at a first Communion can be a challenge to many of those present. We have an oppurtunity to reflect on our own First Communion and the hopes we had on that day. We had good intentions to always
love the Eucharist, and to make it central in our lives as Christians. So, we can reflect on how we have lived out our good intentions and resolutions over the years since we first received Holy Communion.

In reflecting on the Eucharist as the Bread of Life, we sometimes become preoccupied with the how of the Real Presence of Christ. It may be more comforting for our faith to think of the gifts of Bread and Wine being brought to the Altar and being changed. The emphasis is on the change and not on the presence of Christ.

It is customary to describe Holy Communion as the Body of Christ. It is also an ancient tradition of the Church to see ourselves as a community of believers bound together by a common baptism and a common faith in Christ. This community of believers is always descibed as the Body of Christ. Somebody has said that the true meaning of the Eucharist is that the Body of Christ (the Church) is fed by the Body of Christ (the risen son of God).

As far back as the third century bishops in Syria were very concerned that many believers were not coming to Mass and sharing in the Eucharist. They wrote an appeal to them that they should return to sharing in the Eucharist, because their absence was hurting the Body of Christ and diminishing the Body of Christ. Could you make a similar appeal to any of your friends today?
