THE FAMILY

Today's readings are all based on the family, as in parents and children and the wider family of God.

God created the first family when he placed Adam and Eve on earth.  They looked after each other and their children and together they became a unit forming a household.

A family is built on and can only survive on generosity, trust, fidelity, sacrifice, caring and compassion.  When we add up each of these elements they translate into LOVE.

Eliminate any one element or introduce a negative element such as selfishness, mistrust, infidelity, cruelty, heartlessness or self-centredness and a family is in trouble, split up or live in fear.

I was at a funeral recently of a colleague and there heard the greatest compliment that could be paid to anyone, paid to him:
"He had everything he wanted in this life - his family, his wife and his children loved him".

Prayer of Blessing for Your Home:
May God bless this house, from its foundation to its roof.
May he bless every doorpost, every stone and timber.
May he bless the family and the table on which the food is set.
May he bless every room for sound sleep at night.
May he bless the door that we open willingly to the poor and the stranger, as well as to our relatives.
May he bless the windows which let in light to us from sun, moon and stars.
May he bless the roof above our heads, and each firm wall surrounding us today.  With neighbours, may peace and love abound.
May God bless this family of ours and keep it from danger; and may he lead us all to his own kingly house of hospitality forever.
