WHY?

St John tells us the difference Jesus made in our understanding of the Old Testament Commandment to love God and neighbour.  The why changes.  We do it because "God has first loved us".  We see the proof of it in Jesus' life and death.

As Pope Benedict points out in his letter, "this means that love is no longer a mere command, but a response to the gift of love with which God draws near to us".

We don't have to go far to find Him.  He is deep within each one's heart.  However He doesn't impose, "He stands at the door and knocks".  If we open our heart to Him, He will reveal Himself to us and teach us to treat our neighbour with respect and fairness - the basis of love.
