 AN UNPREDICTABLE WORLD

The important thing in today’s reading is not the how or why of the ‘end time’, either for the world or for oneself, but how we live in the meantime.  What reassurance can we have in the trials that  are part of life?  Jesus directs us towards trust in His Father’s care - pointing out that even one hair of our head matters for Him.

Trust between     persons comes by     being present to     each other.  The     same goes for our     relationship with     God.  That      means being present to the One who is always present to us and listening to us.  We need to listen too as well as talk to Him.  Otherwise how could we build up our trust and feel secure enough to entrust our life and the life of those we love into His Hands; now and at the hour of our death!

Life may be unpredictable, His Love is steadfast.

Pope Benedict

has recently published a book entitled ‘Jesus of Nazareth’.  He says that this book is something on which he had been working before he became Pope, and that every free moment he has had since his election has been given over to the writing of this book.  The present volume covers only part of the public life of Jesus - from Baptism at the Jordan to the Transfiguration - and later volumes will deal with the infancy narrative and the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus.  The Pope’s great aim in writing this book is to help us to realise that the parables and miracles of Jesus do not belong just to the time he lived in Palestine.  They belong to us just as much as they did to the people of his own time, and therefore have a relevance to our lives.  Every parable of Jesus and every healing moment confronts us with the choice of rejecting Jesus or seeing these moments as part of our conversion experience.  The more we come to know Jesus, the more we can trust him as our Saviour.  What this means is that we can benefit greatly from a better knowledge of the New Testament by reading it more often.  Also, we can stand back from the Christmas rush and allow the event of Christmas to confront us more forcefully and lead us to greater faith and trust in the person of Jesus.
