CONFESSIONS - Saturday 2.00-3.00pm in the Day Chapel. SUFFERING DISCIPLESHIP Poor Peter. After being called a “rock” by Jesus in last Sunday’s Gospel, today he gets a rap on the knuckles for understanding that the Christ of his dreams (all glory and prestige) is not the Christ that Jesus must grow into and become. Jesus faced suffering and rejection which could only be transformed if accepted. Jesus makes it clear that the Father wants us to open our eyes to reality and to change what needs changing in our lives. If we can see the false pride that makes us think that we don’t need Him, or the despair that makes us lose faith – we are carrying the cross. As followers of Jesus we have assurance that our way of the cross does not go unnoticed. Jesus is with us on the way as our strength in our weaknesses. Our carrying of the cross and our helping others to carry theirs, is the proof of love and discipleship in action. For Jesus, that is enough. DURROW BLESSING OF GRAVES Cemetery Sunday in Durrow will be next Sunday, 10th with blessing of graves taking place after the 11.30am Mass. FAMILY MASS Our Family Mass Liturgy at the 10.00am Mass will resume next Sunday, 10th. All are welcome. SEEING YOUR LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPEL Matthew 16:21-27 Short-term loss is sometimes necessary for long-term gain, as a student studying, or an athlete training, can testify. When have you found that denying yourself proved to be worthwhile because of what you gained afterwards? Jesus was teaching his followers that the path of discipleship would involve pain and suffering. His friend Peter would have none of it. Sometimes friends have a mistaken idea of what is for our good. What lessons have you learned about handling bad advice from a good friend? Jesus knew that because his good news message was not acceptable to the authorities he would suffer and die. In spite of this, he trusted that the power of God would overcome evil. Have you seen a good news message survive even though opponents tried to stifle it? Jesus promised that those who suffer for the kingdom would be rewarded. Perhaps, even in this earthly life, you have experienced reward for faithful discipleship. What have these rewards been? - John Byrne osa Intercom July/August 2023 STRENGTH FOR TODAY Give me strength for today Lord, wherever I go. Let no danger daunt me, whatever the foe. Let no task overcome me, no trial my heart fret. I would walk with You Lord, in the path You have set. Let no burden overcome me, give me strength to bear. Then I will have courage, with whatever my care. Let no grief overwhelm me, wherever I am. Give me strength for today, Lord, strength from Your hand.
