THE CALL TO FOLLOW

In today’s Gospel we hear about the call of Peter, Andrew, James and John by the Lord.  They were not the only ones called.  He has called and is calling each one of us too.  He holds out the invitation to all of us, from the time we were baptised and confirmed, to be “fishers of men” (Mt 4:19).   It is a call to Mission that we all share and their response was very courageous.

In today’s world, that generosity and courage is needed more than ever, to build up Christ’s Kingdom and to be missionaries of light for all we meet.  The world calls us in many subtle ways, and it can be very difficult to disentangle ourselves from the demands of modern society, to the commitment of discipleship.  We should not be daunted or discouraged, because when we answer the Lord’s call, we are in partnership with Him and we never journey alone.

There is a strong call in the Gospel for repentance if we have failed in our commitment to the Lord and to each other.

Let us ask Him today to strengthen us to respond to the call: “Repent! The kingdom of the Lord is at hand”, (Mt 4:17).

WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY 18TH-25TH JANUARY

… In this week of Prayer for Christian Unity, Paul’s message to Christians in Corinth deserves mention.  It is unequivocal: ‘make up the differences between you … be united in belief and practice’.  During this special Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, we are invited to play our part, especially by praying for unity among and between Christian communities.  Prayer matters, because Christian Unity is ultimately gift of the Spirit.  But reconciliation involves action too …

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK SUNDAY 22ND TO SUNDAY 29TH JANUARY

THEME: ‘ WALKING TOGETHER IN FAITH & LOVE’

For this year’s annual celebration of Catholic education, CSW will draw on three features of the Synodal Pathway: ‘Communion, Participation and Mission’.  The theme for CSW 2023 is dedicated to celebrating the gift of Catholic education and recognizing the love and generosity of the entire school community: student, staff and home.

SEEING YOUR LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS Matthew 4:12-23

‘The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light’ … Jesus applies this to himself and his message.  Who have been the Jesus people who have been a source of light to you?  Have you been such a light for others?

His message was a call to repentance, to a change of attitude toward God, from seeing God as one to be feared, to seeing God as a God of love.  When have you heard that call in your life? What was it like for you?

Jesus invited disciples to join him in his mission. In responding, the disciples ‘left their nets’ to follow Jesus.  Sometimes we have to disentangle ourselves from other things to give ourselves freely and wholeheartedly to a commitment.  Have you experienced being ‘enmeshed’ and being free? Where did you find life?

In v 23 we have a summary of the ministry of Jesus – ‘proclaiming the good news of the kingdom’ and witnessing to this by teaching and healing. Who have been the people you have known who have witnessed to the ‘kingdom’, the reign of God in our world? What have been the signs that accompanied their witness? When have you done this yourself?   (Intercom Jan 23)
