BEING A WITNESS

In today’s Gospel, John the Baptist speaks about Jesus and reveals to others the mystery of this person, Jesus – “I am the witness that He is the Chosen One of God”.  John keeps declaring who he is not in order to say who Jesus is.  John was not the light, “only the witness to speak for the Light”.  He is the first Christian witness – the first person to lead others to Jesus, whom he identifies as the Messiah.  His relationship with Jesus is beautifully put by St Augustine:

I listen: He is the One who speaks

I am enlightened: He is the light

I am the ear: He is the Word

Later in the Gospels, Jesus tells the disciples that when they receive the Spirit of Truth, “you will be my witness”.  This charge is given to each one of us.  Through Baptism, we have received the Spirit; we have been called to witness to Jesus, to show others the way to Him.  People may need help to come to Jesus, and indeed, none of us comes to Him alone.

Have we lost the courage to speak to each other about Jesus; about the things that matter most to us?  Will anyone care?  We must have the courage to speak about Jesus to each other, to share what we believe.  We know what we believe because we love – and in the power of that love we can share our belief with each other.

TULLAMORE PARISH CHOIR

New members are invited to join the Parish Choir. We sing at 11.30am Mass on Sundays and rehearse in the Parish Centre every second Thursday. Telephone Martina for details on 0857630022

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

Since most of us were baptised as infants, we do not remember the event.  Yet, no matter what age you were, it still has the same effects: cleansing of sin, imparting of grace, giving of the Holy Spirit, adoption as a child of God, and incorporation into the Church.  Take time today to thank God for the gift of baptism and reflect on the importance of your baptism.

Baptism begins our covenant relationship with God.  Like all covenantal relationships (e.g. marriage), this relationship takes work.  Make an extra effort this week to invest time and energy into your relationship with God and ask for His grace to help you grow closer to Him.

SEEING YOUR LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS

John 1:29-34

John is the one who directs people to Jesus as the one who had a life-giving message for them.  Who have been the people in your life whose example or advice pointed you in the direction of a fuller life?  Who has helped you to appreciate the importance of Jesus and his message?

In the narrative John recognized that Jesus had more to offer people than he himself.  He had the humility not to need to be the star of the show.  Whom have you known with that grounded sense of the own place?

John proclaims Jesus as one who takes away the sin of the world.  Who have been the people who, for you, continued this mission of Jesus and led you from sin and guilt to forgiveness and freedom?  For whom have you done this?

It was not just on the cross that Jesus gave his life as the Lamb of God.  His public ministry was a constant struggle against injustice and oppression.  When have you shared in this mission of Jesus?  Who have been models of this for you?
