SEEING YOUR LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPEL

Luke 18:9-14

We are often defensive in our relationships with others.  We are reluctant to let others see us as we see ourselves.  Occasionally we meet someone with whom we can be totally open and know we will be accepted.  With whom have you had that kind of a relationship?  What was it like for you to have that freedom?

Likewise with God, when we come to prayer pretending to be better than we are, we are hiding from God.  What difference does it make when you pray to God, acknowledging your faults and limitations?  Have you ever found that when you are humble in this way in prayer, God lifts you up?

The parable is also a cautionary tale against judging others negatively on the basis of externals.  Perhaps God, who looks into the heart, sees them differently.  When have you discovered there was more to another person than the negative picture you got from first impressions?  What lesson did you learn for yourself from this?

MISSION SUNDAY

World Mission Sunday takes place today.  On this day we think of struggling parishes in the growing church throughout Africa, South America, Asia and Oceania.  A retiring collection will be  taken up which will help over 1100 young dioceses and provides assistance to communities for them to build schools, health centers, parish halls and churches. It also supports in the education of future leaders in faith.

LIST OF THE DEAD

November is the month when we pray especially for the dead.  November 1st is the Feast of all Saints and November 2nd is the commemoration of the Faithful Departed (All Souls).

An important tradition in Ireland is writing down the names of our departed friends and relations on the Altar List of the Dead.  The list is compiled every November and Mass is offered for those on it, at all List of the Dead Masses in November and every First Friday for the coming twelve months.  Take time with your family to write the list.  Think of family, friends and neighbours over the years.  Particularly remember those who have no one to pray for them.

Dead List forms are available in the Church.  Please fill one out, if you would like to do so, and drop it into the Sacristy or the Parish Centre.

NIGHT OF LIGHT- CELEBRATION OF HALLOWEEN

Monday 31st, let’s celebrate with Holy Mass at 6.00pm in Tullamore Church, followed by a Procession and a party in the Parish Centre.  Children are invited to come along dressed as … their favourite Saint.

Halloween means evening of ‘The Saints’ and while it has been re-designed by culture as a night of goblins and ghouls, the whole idea of Halloween is the preparation for the great feast of All Saints Day November 1st.
