JUSTICE AND FAIR PLAY All of the readings in today’s liturgy point to issues of social justice and fair play. We live in a world infinitely more complex and sophisticated than that of the prophet Amos. However, the message is as relevant today as it was in his day. The inequitable sharing of the world’s resources and the corruption that can exist within society should be a matter of concern for us all as Christians. Similarly, St. Paul tells us that as Disciples of Christ we must make an honest contribution to the welfare of society. We must support legitimate authority and encourage those around us to work towards the creation of a just and fair society. St. Luke in the gospel, openly highlights how open we can be to the materialisation and wealth around us and see it as an end, rather than a means to an end. He encourages prudence and wise use of wealth and good purpose. Another characteristic we need to cultivate is trust, which should be evident in our daily relationships as a Christian community. Finally, he reminds us that we cannot serve two masters and here maybe we might reflect the words of Jesus, “blessed are the poor of spirit, blessed are those who are merciful, blessed are those who strive for justice”. SEEING YOUR LIFE THROUGH LENS OF THE GOSPELS LUKE 16:1-13 (shorter form 10-13) As often with the parables of Jesus, this one is intended to shock in order to make us think. Jesus is not praising the injustice of the servant, but his purposefulness in preparing for the future. In your experience what difference does it make when you are purposeful and energetic instead of lethargic? It was his master’s call to account that galvanised the servant into action. What have been the experiences, or people, that have galvanised you into action when you had been somewhat half-hearted in your efforts? Who have been the people whose energy, drive and astuteness have been an inspiration to you in how to handle difficult situations? ‘No servant can be the slave of two masters’. When have you experienced the truth of this statement? John Byrne, Intercom Sept 2022 THOUGHT FOR THE DAY Friends are like pillars on your porch; sometimes they hold you up, sometimes they lean on you, sometimes it’s just enough to know they’re standing by.
