WHO IS MY NEIGHBOUR?

The parable in the Gospel reading is well known to all of us as the parable of the “Good Samaritan”.   In the time of Jesus, the Samaritans were regarded by other Jews as dangerous renegades, far removed from God and scarcely people careful of the law and its principals.  This was their stereotype - the image that their society had created and accepted and passed down to their children about all Samaritans.   For them to be a Samaritan was conceptualised as being a bad person.  Do we harbour stereotypes in our souls about other people?

The story does not need repeating.  The lesson is clear.  Our neighbour is all people, extending out from the members of our own families, to those in our parish community and town, and more broadly to those of all kinds - colour, race, nationality, gender, social class in our country and throughout the world.  We should show compassion and love to all.  Indeed, we must love all these, our neighbours, as ourselves.  That’s the hard bit.  Can we get rid of our stereotypes of other people and act instead like the Good Samaritan?  We could make a start by trying to practice the seven corporal and the seven spiritual works of mercy in regard to our neighbours.

SEEING YOUR LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPEL Luke 10:25-37

The gospel brings us right to the heart of what a Christian life involves: love of God and love of neighbour.  Jesus tells us that having life both now and in the future is the fruit of living in a spirit of love.  How have you experienced love given and received as a source of life and vitality?

With media today we are brought face to face with suffering, poverty and hunger so vast that it can engender a feeling of helplessness and hopelessness.  The parable challenges us about how we react when we come face to face with a person in need.  We may sometimes try to avoid getting involved.  Recall when you overcame this reaction and reached out to help.  What did that do for you, and for the other person?

In “The Joy of the Gospel” Pope Francis comments that it is a temptation for some religious people to claim they are too busy to get involved with the poor and says ‘none of us can think we are exempt from concern for the poor and for social justice.’  Who are the people whose commitment to these causes inspire you.
