OUR STRUGGLE FOR FAITH

Our challenge of faith experienced by Thomas is something that we can all encounter on life’s journey.  Sadly, we never experienced the physical presence of Jesus in our lives as he did.  He had accepted the hard and sad truth of Jesus’ death and had begun to move on in his life.  We might also suggest in defense of Thomas that he was not so much a “doubter” as he was a realist.  Indeed, his comment regarding his need to see and touch the wounds of Jesus, while somewhat crude, was merely seeking a proof similar to what the other disciples had already seen and experienced.  If we can put ourselves into his shoes, we may begin to realise the astonishing and unbelievable miracle of Jesus’ resurrection.  From this perspective, I suggest many of us are like Thomas and if we were in his position, we too might seek further “proof” before believing in the resurrection.

We should great comfort and strength in the response of Jesus to Thomas, “…happy are those who have not seen and get believe”.  In a sense faith itself was Jesus’ parting gift to Thomas and to us through the spirit.  Our faith is grounded in the Easter message – so let us remind ourselves to spend time in growing our faith by prayer, reflection and living the message of Easter.

THANK YOU

Sincere thank you to all who helped out, in very difficult conditions, at our Dawn Mass and to everyone who helped prepare for all of our Easter Ceremonies.

SEEING YOUR LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPEL - John 20:19-31

‘Peace be with you’ was the greeting of Jesus on meeting his apostles.  Who has come to you bringing peace at times when you were afraid?  To whom have you been able to bring peace?

Thomas, doubting and questioning, is possibly a person with whom we can identify.  What positive part have doubting and questioning played in your life?  How have such moments helped you to know that your life is worthwhile?  How have questions and doubts strengthened your faith?

Note the way that Jesus dealt with Thomas.  He did not give out because he doubted.  He accepted how he felt and led him along to see the truth of his resurrection.  Who has been that kind of teacher for you, gently taking you where you were and leading you to a deeper knowledge of some truth about life?  For whom have you been that kind of teacher?

‘Blessed are they who have not seen and believed’.  That requires great trust.  During the recent pandemic there were times when one wondered if we would ever see the end of it.  Where did you find hope as the pandemic continued month after month?
