SEEING YOUR LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPEL

Mark 8:27-35

‘Who do you say that I am?’ Imagine Jesus putting this question to you. How would you answer it? How would you answer it, not in words taken from a catechism or textbook, but from your own experience of the significance of Jesus in your life? What does Jesus mean to you? What does his gospel message mean to you?

Jesus went on to teach his disciples that following him would be hard at times. There would be a price to pay. Perhaps you also have found that imitating the love and compassion of Jesus is not an easy road? Nor does it come easy to have the constant trust in God that Jesus had. Yet Jesus tells us that this is the way to life. Would you agree?

There is a natural human tendency to shy away from what is painful or difficult. Yet if that is our standard pattern of behaviour, we will not get far in reaching our potential. We will never find who we are capable of being. When have you found it worthwhile to face difficulties, persevere, ‘carry your cross’ for a while to achieve some goal that was important to you?

LEGION OF MARY CENTENARY

“THE CRY OF THE EARTH, THE CRY OF THE POOR”

by Archbishop Dermot Farrell

Archbishop Dermot Farrell of Dublin issued a Pastoral Letter on the climate crisis. “We are living on the edge of huge historical change. Our common home, indeed our only home - this planet - is under threat.”

The Archbishop highlights that our lifestyles and the economies which support them are significantly contributing to climate change and the crisis it is causing.

Archbishop Farrell noted that over the past eighteen months the Covid-19 pandemic has brought to the fore “the fragility of our lives and how fleeting are many of the networks on which we have come to depend.”

However, beyond that, he stressed that we need to realize, over the coming decades, that the issues arising from climate change “will impact far more on us than those from the coronavirus pandemic.”

In fact, he added, “the havoc of the pandemic will pale when compared to that of climate change.” He added that the challenge is “to discover how we can live more sustainably, more responsibly, and more humanly in our common home” because Christ came not only to call us to a new way of living, but also “to empower us to live in that new way” in the face of what has become humanity’s defining challenge.
