NOVEMBER, REMEMBERING THE SOULS IN PURGATORY

The Vatican has extended the availability of certain plenary indulgences for the souls in Purgatory, amid concerns about avoiding large gatherings of people in churches or cemeteries and including those confined to home due to the pandemic. In the month of November, the Church has two traditional means of obtaining a plenary indulgence for the souls in Purgatory.

1.  The first is to visit a cemetery and pray for the dead during the Octave of All Saints’ Day, which is Nov. 1-8.This year, the Vatican decreed that this plenary indulgence can be obtained on any day in November.

2.  The second plenary indulgence is connected to the Feast of All Souls’ Day on Nov. 2 and can be received by those who visit a church or oratory on that day and recite the Our Father and the Creed.

The Vatican said that this plenary indulgence has also been extended and is available to Catholics throughout the month of November to reduce crowds. Both indulgences must include the three ordinary conditions and full detachment from sin. The ordinary conditions of an indulgence are sacramental confession, reception of the Eucharist, and prayer for the intentions of the pope.

The Vatican also said that, because of the health emergency, the elderly, the sick, and others who cannot leave the house for serious reasons can participate in the indulgence from home by recitingprayers for the deceased before an image of Jesus or the Virgin Mary. They must also spiritually unite themselves to other Catholics, be completely detached from sin, and have the intention of fulfilling the ordinary conditions as soon as possible.

“SERVICES WILL BE HELD ONLINE”

Services will be held Online; with this one phrase the gov.ie guidelines for Level 3-5 of the national plan have dismissed the real need that thousands of faithful around this country have for the Eucharist. After weeks of lockdown earlier this year and then again under Level 3 and after trojan work on behalf of priests and people to make our church buildings ultra-safe with regard to Covid-19, the faithful are again prevented from going to Mass.

The reasoning for this has not been given in any adequate way. A dismissive one-liner is not good enough. Ireland is the only country in Europe where people cannot get to Mass. While availing of Mass online is beneficial it is no substitute for being physically present. There is huge frustration among people of faith because they feel prevented from worshipping as they need to.

I believe that we in the Church, have taken these restrictions far too easily and have not paid sufficient attention to the huge cost of these restrictions for ordinary people in different ways - spiritually, mentally and economically. Our government has a very difficult job but it must hear the message loud and clear that lockdown is crushing many people including people of faith who believe that the practice of one’s faith in public is an essential service.

Most Reverend AlphonsusCullinan, DD, Bishop of Waterford and Lismore
