SEEING YOUR LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS
John 14:15-21

‘If you love me you will keep mycommandments,’ specifically thecommandment to love oneanother (cf. 13.34). How have youexperienced the link between loveof God and love of those aroundyou?

Jesus is preparing his disciples forhis imminent departure and for afuture in which he would be with them in a different way. He wouldnot ‘leave them orphans’ but sendan ‘Advocate’ to ‘be with (them)for ever’. How have youexperienced the presence of Godwith you in your life?

Perhaps you have also experiencedthe challenge of preparinganother (a child, a friend) for atime when you would no longer bephysically together. Recall howyou gave the message of yourongoing support.

How have you experienced thepresence and support of a lovedone (parent, spouse, friend) whencircumstances have separated youfrom them?

The proof of the ongoing presenceof Jesus with his disciples is that ‘Ilive and you will live’. Discipleshipis about much more than rules andregulations. It is about being alive. How has discipleship helped youto be more fully alive?

ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS

Today in the Gospel, Jesus offers words of encouragement to His disciples.  Even though He is about to leave, He will not abandon them.  Rather He promises to send the Holy Spirit through whom the disciples will continue to live in union with Jesus.  The fundamental commandment of Jesus is one based on love; love of God and of our neighbours.

The final words in today’s Gospel clearly identify the conditions necessary for us, His followers, to share in the in the life of God.  To attain this we are called to share in the love and obedience that Jesus showed to His Father daily during our lives.  We are challenged to commit to the uncompromising message of Jesus when He explained the connection between loving Him and His commandments.

Loving Jesus, therefore, is not just something emotional; it is also a challenge for us on a practical level to love those all around us.
