Baptism is one of God’s most beautiful gifts.  We call it a gift because it is conferred on those who bring nothing of their own.  From the very day of the Holy Spirit descending on the Apostles the young church celebrated and administered Baptism.

It was Peter who encouraged the crowd to repent and be Baptised in the name of Jesus Christ and they would receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Baptism was given to anyone who believed in Jesus.  Even in those early days Baptism was connected with faith.  That is why we celebrate our Baptism at the Easter Vigil.

Jesus himself asked to be Baptised by John.  It symbolizes his desire to identify with us so that he will be able to help us on our journey.  He now changes from being a private person to a public figure.

At the baptism of Jesus the spirit descended on him like a dove.  Everything had changed.  Jesus had begun his journey to Jerusalem, to Calvary and the empty tomb.

Baptism is a sacrament of faith and faith needs the community of believers.  At Baptism the Godparent is asked what he or she wants for the newly Baptised.  The answer is faith.

Lord fill us with your Spirit that we may radiate the joy of the Gospel to those around us.

MATTHEW 3:13-17

The Baptism of Jesus marks a turning point in his life and the start of his public ministry.  Recall moments when your life changed and you moved into a new phase.

The experience was one in which Jesus had a new sense of his own identity.  What have been the experiences which have helped shaped your sense of who you are?

How have you come to an awareness of being a child of God, beloved by God, and one on whom rests the grace of God?

It is surprising that Jesus, the Saviour of the world, asks to be baptised by John.  The request symbolizes his desire to identify with us.

At the same time he is filled with the Holy Spirit.  That step of identifying with us is an important element in his being able to help us.

Have you ever found that when someone identifies with you, it is easier for him/her to help you?  Has your ability to identify with others had any impact on your effectiveness in helping others?
