In the Charles Dickens novel, A Christmas Carol, we read how even the miserable and hard-hearted Ebenezer Scrooge, was transformed into an entirely new person - a much more lovable person who is at last at peace with himself and the world around him. This is a vital part of the Christmas message for all of us, to allow our better selves to blossom and grow and to make the world around us a better place.

This Christmas we can try to care for those around us who are in any need. It is an opportunity to spread warmth and happiness in a world that, for many, is challenging in these difficult times.

May we all hear in our hearts the song of the Angels at Bethlehem, on that first Christmas night, heralding peace and good-will and may we experience the coming to fruit of what is best in each one of us.

At this holy time, we remember in our prayers all those who are going through difficulties - especially those who are sick.

For many people, Christmas is the time for coming home to family and friends. It is important to be close to those who are dear to us and to touch base.

This time can also be a moment of new discovery and decision, new opportunities as we prepare for the New Year. The love of God, which entered our world in such a spectacular way at the Birth of the Christ-Child, takes on a new force. It can change us and we can turn away from the forces of darkness and negativity and open our minds and hearts with a new and realistic optimism.

The sense of eternity enters our world of here and now. Peace and good-will to all is the Christmas cry of the Christian at this holy time as we gather at the Crib.

May you be blessed

With the Spirit of the season, which is peace.

The gladness of the season, which is hope,

And the heart of the season, which is love.
