Message of Hope

Each of us has a strong desire to go to Heaven when we die.  Our hope stems from our strong faith in life after death, where we will enjoy God' presence forever.

Our readings today should fill us with great hope.  "The King of the world will raise us up to live again forever" (2 Mac 7:9).  St Paul says, "May God our Father who in his mercy gave us eternal consolation and hope, console your hearts" (2 Thess 2:16-17).  Jesus says, "....the dead do rise to life" (Lk 20:35).

We remember with consolation and hope our loved ones whom God has taken home to himself, and are now living in the love and happiness of life everlasting which He promised.

FACTS & FIGURES - TULLAMORE MASS SURVEY 2004

Recently Bishop Michael Smith asked that all parishes of the Diocese carry out a Mass count on the Sunday attendance in the Diocese.  This is to aid pastoral planning for the future and it was decided that the weekend of 16/17 Oct could be the chosen time.
We have enclosed the results and the previous Mass count from February 04 for comparison.
2004                    FEB                    OCT
7.00PM                  977                   885
8.30PM                  538                   543
8.30AM                  265                   276
10.00AM                759                   547
11.30AM                 837                  844
1.00PM                 1348                1307
DURROW                 228                   214
TOTAL                 4952                4603
       %                  54.8                 51.0

The percentages of attendance are calculated as follows:
i The 2002 census states that the population of Tullamore was 10,098.  This figure was roundeded off to 11,000.
ii Fr Michael McGreail, former senior lecturer in Sociology, Maynooth, and author of recent "Meath Diocese Survey" states that only 82% of any parish population are free to attend Mass on any given Sunday.  This means 9,020 equals100% attendance in Tullamore parish.
iii Parishioners were counted during the homily time.
iv The recent count was held on 23/24 Oct by mistake.  This was unfortunate because it was a Bank Holiday weekend and many families were away.  With this in mind the more accurate figure is closer to 4,800 which gives an attendance of 53.5%.
