NO MUSICAL CHAIRS IN GOD'S KINGDOM!

In today's Gospel Jesus is at a meal in the house of one of the leading Pharisees.  He noticed the undignified scramble for places of honour.  Jesus advocates learning humility - not by playing musical chairs at banquets, but by associating with the poor, the crippled and the blind.

The guest list for a party with Jesus is a parable of the Kingdom.  God is the eccentric host who delights in sharing with those always overlooked in a society that scrambles for honour: the legion of crippled who hobble where others hop; the lonely who are never invited anywhere.  The people being led to places of honour in the Kingdom are people who can't return invitations, who are hungry for the food and company that table fellowship can bring.

Jesus' message hugs these people into importance.  He keeps God's preference for the "little" people before us in His teaching.

His love dignifies people - He asks that our love does too.

Beginning the School Year

What will this year bring?  We do not know;
it will likely bring its usual times of work and play, experiences of success and failure, all the things that are part of school life.
It is a new beginning;
the planting of a seed that will grow for a year, the seed of fruit that will blossom in times to come.
It offers new hope;
hope for good work, for successful results, for friendship, for fun, for learning, prayer and fun.
May there be hard work, faith and friendship.
May no one in school be lonely;
may no one be left out in class;
may no one suffer because of how others treat them.
As we begin this year in hope, in prayer and in friendship, may God begin it with us, be with us during it, and successfully bring it to its conclusion.  -
