23 May 2017
Almighty Father, You have given Your only Son to die for our sins
Grant us so to put away malice and wickedness that we may always serve You
In pureness of living and truth; through the merits of Your Son Jesus Christ our Lord,
Who is alive and reigns with You, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen

REMEMBERING HOLY WEEK & EASTER

Thank you to everyone who helped with the Holy Week and Easter ceremonies in the Church of the Assumption, Hospital Chapel, Durrow and the site of the Dawn Mass.  There were so many who volunteered their time and gifts during that time and the Parish Team really appreciate those who were involved.  Thanks also to the thousands of people who participated in the ceremonies and we wish all our parishioners a very Happy & Joyful Easter Season.

TWO NEW SAINTS

This weekend Pope Francis will declare two of his predecessors saints. Pope John XXIII (23rd) was elected pope in 1958 and was pope until 1963.  He was born in a small village in the north of Italy in 1881 and served as papal nuncio in many countries including Turkey and France.  He was made a cardinal and patriarch (archbishop) of Venice before his election as Pope.  He called the Second Vatican Council, but died before its conclusion. In Italian he is still referred to as Good Pope John.

John Paul II was born in 1920 in Poland.  As a young man he wanted to be an actor.  During the War he answered the call and began to study for the priesthood.  As a young priest he studied in Rome and returned to his native Poland to teach in university.  He was appointed auxiliary bishop and later Archbishop of Krakow. He ministered in difficult times, facing many challenges from the communist government.  He was elected Pope in 1978, the year of the three Popes.  He was one of the longest serving Popes, dying in 2005.  He travelled the world, including making the only ever visit of a pope in Ireland in 1979.

We pray both these great men, now declared saints of the Church, will pray for us, our families, our parish and our world.
St John XXIII, pray for us.
St John Paul II, pray for us.
St Peter, pray for us
