Father Behan was born in Kilcormac and educated at St. Finianâs College and the Irish College, Rome, where he was ordained in 1967. He served in a number of parishes, including Mullingar (1968,) Ballynacargy (1969 â 72), Summerhill (1972-80), Kilbeggan (1980-85) and Kentstown - Beauparc (1985-93). He was appointed Parish Priest of Oristown in August 1993.
Bishop Smith has offered his deepest sympathies to Father Behan's brother and two sisters and extended family, as well as to Father John O'Brien, Adminstrator and the parishioners of Oristown. The Bishop points out that "this year Father Billy would have celebrated his 40th anniversary of priesthood, a ministry which he lived with great dedication in the daily witness of his life and, in a particular way, through the illness which he bore in recent times.
He was supported in his suffering not least of all by the depth of his faith and especially with the tremendous kindness and practical assistance which he received from his parishioners and also from family and brother priests".
Bishop Smith will celebrate the Month's Memory Mass for Father Behan next month and in the meantime he commends this gentle soul to the Lord and asks God's comfort upon all who mourn his passing.
