  JOURNEY TO GLORY

We are all on a Calvary journey to glory.  Most of us have our Judas moments, when we make choices with unforeseen circumstances.  We do not choose suffering, sickness, loneliness and rejection, but if we want to know Christ, we are united in “the fellowship of sharing in His suffering” (Philippians 3:10)
Jesus chose: not to retaliate or return evil for evil; not to complain about being mistreated; not to strike back or resist suffering and humiliation.  He also chose: to offer not just His suffering, but His whole life for us; to forgive; to be obedient to His Father; to be merciful; to portray peace; to be the suffering servant.
“I have not resisted....I offered by back to those who struck me...” (Isaiah 50:5-6)
He did not suffer so as to wipe out suffering in our lives, but to show us how to suffer.
In a world where many are scarred by the violence inflicted on each other, to remain silent is to be bound by fear, rather than being free to love and reach out to ease and diminish suffering.
As we enter Holy Week, let us keep watch with Him and try to enter more fully into His journey to Calvary and to glory.

Kindness is for all times, in all situations -
not just when it suits you.

ANOINTING OF THE SICK

In the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick we reach out to our sisters and brothers who are sick or infirm, to comfort and strengthen them in their times of need.  We pray over them, anoint them with oil and invoke the Holy Spirit to bring them healing and peace.  In so doing we are acknowledging that the sick are an integral part of the Christian community who need our special care and attention.  Rather than leaving them isolated in their illness and infirmity the Christian community cherishes them as the priest lays his hands on them and anoints them.  It is the task of all of us who are Christian to continue this work of healing through our words and actions.

AN SEACHTAIN MHOIR

Today we begin Holy Week, the highpoint of the Church’s year. On this Palm Sunday we enter already into the week’s events. Glory and defeat are combined here in a way like never before or since. The arrival of Christ in Jerusalem is greeted with triumphal scenes, and the cries of the crowd – “Hosanna to the Son of David” – seem to indicate that at last Christ’s glory has been recognised, he is the Son of David, the Messiah! But crowds are fickle, it’s a short step from crowd to mob, and within the space of a few days their cry becomes “Crucify him! Crucify him!”. And so we read the story of the rejection of Christ by his close followers, by the authorities and by the people, and the shocking events that culminate in his crucifixion and death. But it is precisely these events that will lead to the revelation of Christ’s true glory as the Son of God, his death being the means by which the mystery of God’s love is revealed to us. The ceremonies of Holy Week are a unique opportunity for us to live this saving event.
