DEAD WOOD

In some ways, our lives are no different from a garden.  Like a garden, it is amazing how much dead wood can be found in a good life.  We only get the best out of it by cutting away what is useless and feeding what is good.

Even the best of our lives can benefit from some pruning.  The good fruit that we expected to bear is the love of God through the love of our neighbour in word and deed.  These will more than make up for a multitude of our sins.  Christ is depending on us being his hands and voice, carrying his good news to the others.

If we live in Christ and he in us, there is no limit to the fruit we can bear because apart from him there can be no lasting growth.

“Anyone who does not remain in me is like a branch that has been thrown away.  They wither”. (Jn 15:6)

Insults are the arguments for those who are in the wrong.

SEEING YOUR LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPEL

In a relationship connectedness is important.  Relationships cannot be taken for granted and need time and care to be life-giving.  What does your experience tell you of the truth of this in your relationship:

with God; with your friends; with your family;   with communities or groups to which you belong?

‘Every branch that bears fruit he prunes to make it bear more fruit’.  In what ways do you see that you have  been ‘pruned’ by the experiences of life, or by the word of God, to be a more fruitful person?  Perhaps you have also experienced the need for ‘pruning’ in significant relationships in your life.

The parable also reminds us that we are not the source of our own life.  It is a gift from God, from our parents and from all who have nourished us.  Give thanks for those who have been a source of life for you.

God is glorified by our being fruitful.  When has human fruitfulness reminded you of God at work in our world?
