WANTED: PASTORAL LEADERS

“What is sought for are not highly intelligent priests, but those who are ‘pastoral’ - those who have a heart for the people, who know the people under their care and are concerned for them, those who mirror Jesus the Good Shepherd today.” (The Eucharist - Liturgy & Life, 3 May 09)

On this Vocations Sunday, we visualise Jesus the Good Shepherd, who knows each of us personally, is concerned for our needs, leads us to His Father, and ultimately lays down his life for us.

Thank God, most of those who are called to be priests and religious today, do not have to lay down their lives for their flocks; but the pastoral characteristics of the Good Shepherd are still the ideal requirements for priestly vocation.

It is noteworthy that in this time of economic recession, there is neither unemployment nor redundancy in the priesthood or religious life, and there are plenty of vacancies.

School leavers and young adults are reminded to listen for the Call of Jesus to volunteer for service in His Ministry. The rest of us are asked to pray that younger people will be generous in responding to the Call.

No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.

VOCATIONS TO THE PRIESTHOOD

We all have a vocation. The first vocation or call is to the follow Jesus in our everyday life. We are called into the Church at baptism and every day we try to answer that call by the way we live. Christ, however, calls some to follow him in a particular way, in the priesthood and the consecrated life. If you feel that God may be drawing you in this way do not be afraid to answer the call. The decision to become a priest and enter the seminary may seem huge, but with courage and faith all things are possible. If you feel you are 'called' you might like to talk to one of the priests in the parish. This does not mean you have to sign up, but giving yourself the chance to explore the plan God has for you. Vocations come from communities like ours - ordinary people, from ordinary families and ordinary ways of life. Today the Lord who is the Good Shepherd may be saying to you, "come follow me".
BANK HOLIDAY

Tomorrow is a Bank Holiday. There will be one Mass only at 11.00am
JUNIOR PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL

The Junior PPC conducted a survey among 1st year students (school year 2007-2008) about their religious attitudes. They will speak about the results at Masses next weekend.
SEEING YOUR LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS

There is a qualitative difference between a casual acquaintance and a relationship characterised by understanding and care. What changes have you experienced in your relationships as your love and knowledge of other increased? What was it like for you to experience that change?

The good shepherd ‘lays down his life for the sheep’. When has your care for another led you to ‘lay down your life’ for that person, e.g, as a friend, parent, spouse, son or daughter? When have you known another to do this for you?

What do these experiences of love and care in human relationships reveal to you about God’s love for you?
