Jesus sat down opposite the treasury watching the people putting money in. The treasury consisted of thirteen trumpet-shaped metal receptacles into which the money was thrown. The rich could throw in their coins with an attracting rattle as there was no paper money!
A poor widow comes and puts in all she has, two small Roman coins. Jesus notices her and he calls the disciples. He said to them, this poor widow has put in more than all the rich people because she gave all she had!’ The rich only put in what they had over! The spotlight is on the quality of her giving. She could have given the one coin and kept the other.
We must be prudent with our resources but we can never hold back from giving just in case we will not have enough ourselves. At this time of recession we may be tempted not to give; ‘just in case!’ However we are called to trust in God without counting the cost! God assures us that he will look after us so that we have enough.
Let us pray that at this time of recession everyone will have enough!
In times of difficulties, we must not lose sight of our achievements.
BURIAL PLOTS IN CLONMINCH
The Parish Administration Group have decided that from January 1st ‘10, the price of plots will be increased as follows: Single plots from €300 to €400 and double plots from €500 to €750. These increases are necessary for the upkeep of the cemetery and any future work or development necessary, ie paths, walls, etc.
REMEMBERING OUR LOVED ONES
November is a time for remembrance and prayer. As we pray for our beloved dead, we have an opportunity to remind ourselves that God is always with us. In life and death we are carved in the palms of his gentle, yet powerful hands. You may have lost a loved one in the last year, and the wounds of bereavement may still be very painful. St Paul tells us we do not mourn like the others with no hope, because we believe that Jesus is our life.
John Henry Newman wrote a beautiful prayer:
"May the Lord, support us all the day long, until the shadows lengthen and the evening comes, and the busy world is hushed, and the fever of life is over and our work is done. Then in Thy mercy, grant us a safe lodging, and a holy rest and peace at last through Jesus Christ, our Lord."
This November as we pray for the dead, may we have a deeper faith that in Christ all is well.

SEEING YOUR LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS
.
Mark 12:38-44
.
1 The scribes are presented as ostentatious and devious, acting more out of self-interest than the love of God or people. There can be an element of self-interest in each of us. Perhaps there have been times when you have been disturbed by glimpsing in yourself ‘other motives’ in your doing good. Recall when you were awakened to this fact. Where was the good news for you in these experiences?
.
2 In material terms what the widow had to offer was very little. Recall when you felt yourself called to give and gave even though you apparently had very little. Perhaps you have had the experience of finding that what you thought was little and insignificant meant a great deal to another person. Recall some of those moments.
.
3 The widow ‘gave everything she had, all she had to live on’. In doing so she placed herself in a very vulnerable position, trusting that things would work out. Have you ever found that what seemed a generous but reckless giving of yourself proved life-giving for yourself and others?
