WHO IS MY NEIGHBOUR?

The lawyer in today’s gospel tried to embarrass Jesus, asking “what he should do to inherit eternal life?”  Recognising the test, Jesus responds with a further question concerning what is written in the law and the lawyer’s reading of it.  Jesus leads the lawyer to find his own answer in terms which are familiar and acceptable for one specialised in legal matters.

Placed in the defensive, the lawyer returns to the charge with a further question.  “Who is my neighbour?”  Now, Jesus answers with a story.  A man lies half dead on the side of the road.  A priest and Levite see him but pass by.  These men represented honourable positions.  The lawyer, no doubt, would include them among his neighbours!  The third man was a mistrusted Samaritan and despised by the Jews.  He stops and cares for the wounded man.  Again, Jesus calls on the lawyer to answer his own question!  Which of these men do you think proved himself a neighbour?

For Jesus the real question is not who is my neighbour, but, how does one prove oneself a true neighbour to others?

Let us spend some time asking ourselves are we true neighbours?

Love is the only thing that multiplies when divided.

SEEING YOUR LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS

Luke 10:25-17

1 Today’s Gospel brings us right to the heart of what a Christian life involves: love of God and of neighbour. Jesus tells us that having life both now and in the future is the fruit of living in a spirit of love. How have you experienced the power of love given and received to be a source of life and vitality?

2 With media today we are brought face to face with suffering, poverty and hunger so vast that it can engender a feeling of helplessness and hopelessness. What the parable challenges us about is how we react when we come face to face with a person in need. We may sometimes try to avoid getting involved. Recall when you overcame this reaction and reached out to help. What did that do for you, and for the other person?

3 Bring to mind the people who have been an inspiration to you by the care and attention they have given to others.
