FEAST OF THE PRESENTATION OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST

When we recite the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary we call to mind in the fourth mystery, the Presentation of Our Lord Jesus in the temple.  Today, the second of February, we celebrate this feast. This day commemorates the day when Jesus meets the God of his fathers in his temple and makes to Him the first ritual offering of his earthly life, under the living form of a pair of doves. In the Gospel reading, Jesus also meets there the believing people in Simeon and Anna, witnesses and proclaimers of this manifestation.

This day is also known as Candlemas.  Christians consider Jesus as the “light of the world”, so it is fitting that candles are blessed on this day to celebrate the epiphany of the sacred light. On Candlemas, people bring their candles to church to be blessed and they are then used for the rest of the year, a symbol of Jesus Christ, “The Light of the World”.

HOLY HOUR FOR THE PREVENTION OF SUICIDE

A special holy hour for the prevention of suicide is held on the Thursday before the First Friday of every month, in the Day Chapel of Tullamore Church, from 6.30-7.30pm.

All are welcome to join us as we pray that the Holy Spirit may help and guide all of those who are troubled at this time. Our next hour is on Thursday 6th.

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION HOSPITAL CHAPEL

The Eucharistic Adoration committee wishes to announce that 15,200 hours of Eucharistic Adoration was recorded in the Hospital Chapel during 2019. What a wonderful amount of prayer in our parish. Thank you.

To maintain and continue this Ministry we constantly need new adorers to fill vacant hours. If you would like to take on an hour please phone 085-1162668 for details. All Welcome.

SEEING YOUR LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPEL

Luke 2:22-40

It was a day that started without an expectation of anything unusual. Simeon and Anna set about making a visit to the Temple that had become part of their daily routine. Joseph and Mary were going to make the presentation of their child in the Temple, an optional but common practice of God-fearing parents. What started out as an ordinary day turned out to be a day with a meeting they would remember for a long time. Perhaps you too have had significant meetings on what you expected to be just an ordinary day?

Simeon acknowledged that not all would accept the light that would shine through Jesus, and this rejection would be a cause of pain to Mary.  It can be a source of pain to parents, teachers, church ministers, and all who work for others when some reject values, projects, or advice which would be for their good.  Perhaps a sword has pierced your soul as well.  What has helped you to maintain hope in such times?

Even within ourselves we can be aware of division, at times being open to the light of God and at other times resisting it.  Have you known the pain of this struggle?  What has helped you to keep seeking the light of God?

The final sentence speaks of Jesus as one who grew up and became strong and was filled with wisdom.  What has helped you to grow in wisdom?  Have you seen others grow in wisdom through the experience of life?  Recall times when you had a sense of growing up in some way.  What brought that about?  Think also of how you have seen growth in another person.
