BEHOLD THE LAMB OF GOD

In the gospel, we hear John the Baptist publicly testify that Jesus is the Lamb of God, God’s own son. John the Baptist seeing Jesus approaching him calls out, giving witness that Jesus is the One who was to come after him. He calls Jesus the “Lamb of God” and the “Son of God” thus identifying Jesus’ purpose in life, to redeem and save humanity.

John the Baptist’s role was one of preparing and introducing those he encountered to the ministry of the One who was to follow him. His witness as a disciple of Jesus gives us a perfect example of what is required to be a follower of Jesus. By our baptism we have committed to take on a role and ministry similar to that of John, bringing Jesus and His message to our respective local communities.

As we begin this New Year, let us open our hearts and minds to the call of John the Baptist and renew our commitment to living the message of Jesus in our daily lives.

SEEING YOUR LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPEL

John 1:29-34

John is one who directs people to Jesus as the one who had a life-giving message for them.  Who have been the people in your life whose example or advice pointed you in the direction of a feller life? Who has helped you to appreciate the importance of Jesus and his message?

In the narrative, John recognised that Jesus had more to offer the people then he himself had.  John had the humility not to need to be the star of the show.  Who have you known with that grounded sense of their own place?

John proclaims Jesus as one who takes away the sin of the world.  Who have been the people who, for you, continued this mission of Jesus and led you from sin and guilt to forgiveness and freedom?  For whom have you done this?

It was not just on the cross that Jesus gave his life as the Lamb of God.  His public ministry was a constant struggle against injustice and oppression.  When have you shared in the mission of Jesus?  Who have been models of this for you?

WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY 2020

At least once a year, Christians are reminded of Jesus’ prayer for his disciples that “they may be one so that the world may believe” (see John 17.21). Christians come together to pray for their unity. Congregations and parishes all over the world exchange preachers or arrange special ecumenical celebrations and prayer services. The event that touches off this special experience is the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity.

Traditionally the week of prayer is celebrated between 18–25 January, between the feasts of St Peter and St Paul.  The theme for 2020 is ‘Unusual Kindness’. The materials have been prepared by the Christian churches in Malta and Gozo.

Hospitality is a much needed virtue in our search for Christian unity. It calls us to a greater generosity to those in need. The people who showed unusual kindness to Paul and his companions did not yet know Christ, and yet it is through their unusual kindness that a divided people were drawn closer together.

Our own Christian unity will be discovered not only through showing hospitality to one another, but also through loving encounters with those who do not share our language, culture or faith.

This year the Christian Unity Prayer Service will take place in the Methodist Church, Church St, today, Sunday 19th  at 5.00pm.  All are welcome.
