CALLED BY NAME

A wealthy man with a senior job would really need to be searching for something to so forget his dignity as to climb a tree … Zacchaeus did. He not only caught a glimpse of Jesus, but Jesus looked up at him and called him by name. Zaccaeus hurried down filled with joy. What was lost was found! Zacchaeus had heard his own name spoken by Jesus whose gaze held the infinite compassion of God.

As a “son of Abraham” Zacchaeus would have well known the Word of God as spoken by the prophet Isaiah, “I have called you by your name you are mine. Do not be afraid, I have redeemed you.”  For Zacchaeus, suddenly nothing else mattered.  He immediately decides to give away half his property and plenty more besides – not to gain favor from Jesus, but, because he now knows his own true dignity and who he really is.

Jesus doesn’t categorise people into boxes … rich, poor, powerful, stupid, useful etc. He sees the unique person first … and loves them for who they are in themselves. We have to admit that that’s not what we usually do.

We would do well to ask the Holy Spirit to teach us how to see each other as people first so that we are assured of our value and dignity…children of the One Father first of all, everything else is secondary.

MASS FOR THE BEREAVED

Next Saturday, 9th, the 10.00am Mass will be for all the families in our Parish who have lost a loved one during the year.

It is the teaching of the Church and the practice of our ancestors to remember the dead during this month.  Birth, growth and death are of the natural order.  Each of us will die some day as it is part of God’s plan for us.  Let us follow God’s command and pray for the souls of the dead who have gone before us – our relatives, neighbours, ancestors and all the holy souls.

May God increase their glory, ease their pain and grant them remission of their sins.  We can also visit a church or cemetery during this month.

SEEING YOUR LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPEL

Luke 19:1-10

Zacchaeus showed himself open to the call of Jesus, to the surprise of his contemporaries who thought there was no good in tax collectors. Sometimes the people who give us lessons in goodness may be people we previously disregarded. Recall when this happened for you.

It was the eagerness of Zacchaeus to see what kind of a man Jesus was that opened him up to conversion. When you consider moments of change in your life, what were the interests or desires that prepared you for change?

The decision of Jesus to eat in the house of Zacchaeus broke the social norms of his day and scandalized those who saw him. When have you found table fellowship a useful way of breaking down artificial boundaries between people? When has a kind word had this effect?

Zacchaeus had become rich off the backs of the people and they thoroughly disliked him. Yet he was the one singled out by Jesus and he responded to Jesus’ call. Perhaps you have also seen people who hurt you and caused you pain change their ways. How have you reacted to such a change? What has helped you to see the grace of God at work, and give thanks?
