SEEING YOUR LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPEL

“Two men went up to the temple to pray” The parable in today’s Gospel presents two contrasting personalities, a Pharisee and a tax collector, one well regarded in Jewish society, and the other despised. The parable presents them quite simply.

The Pharisee, in his prayer, describes himself as someone who is religiously observant---fasting, paying his tithes, not unjust and so on. He prides himself on being virtuous and he despises everyone else, especially the tax collector down there at the back of the temple. What he says, he actually does perfectly, but does he know it too well!

He is conceited, arrogant, boastful, and is without compassion in his view of his fellow men. He believes that the grace he has been given is his own virtue, and he sees God as one who will recognise his merits. He is pre-occupied with himself. Jesus says that this man goes home not at rights with God. He will not be justified. He has lost the glory of his uprightness because of the sin of arrogance.

The tax collector in contrast cannot find anything to give himself assurance before God. He is humble. He did not presume even to lift up his eyes, but beat his breast and expressed all the sorrow he feels for his faults. He entrusts himself to divine mercy. His lowliness opens him to grace and pardon. “His prayer pierces the clouds” and he goes home at rights with God. He is justified, saved by God, without regard for merit.

When you pray, is your prayer more like that of the Pharisee, or of the tax collector?

NIGHT OF LIGHT CELEBRATION OF HALLOWEEN

Halloween means ‘the evening of the Saints’ and while it has been re designated by culture as a night of goblins and gowls, the whole idea of Halloween is the preparation for the great feast of All Saints Day November 1st.

To mark this, there is a party for children in the Parish Centre, 5.30-7.30pm on Thursday 31st October, Fun, food and games, with a little dash of prayer! Children are invited to come along dressed as…. their favourite Saint!

MONTH OF NOVEMBER

This year we will have a ‘wall of comfort’ in the Church where you will have a chance to write names of loved ones gone before us as a reminder of our commitment to pray for them.

FEAST OF ALL SAINTS, FRIDAY 1st   November

MASS TIMES: TULLAMORE, Thursday, Vigil 6.30pm,

Friday 1st: 7.45am, 10.00am, 1.10pm,

DURROW: Friday 1st, 8.00pm

ALL SOULS DAY, SATURDAY 2nd November

MASS TIMES: 10.00am, 1.10pm

Offered for Alter List of the Dead.

MASS FOR THE BEREAVED

The 10.00am Mass on Saturday 9th will be for all the families in our Parish who have lost a loved one during the year. It is the teaching of the Church and the practice of our ancestors to remember the dead during this month.

Birth, growth and death are of the natural order. Each of us will die some day as it is part of God’s plan for us. Let us follow God’s command and pray for the souls of the dead who have gone before us – our relatives, neighbours, ancestors and all the holy souls.

May God increase their glory, ease their pain and grant them remission of their sins. We can also visit a church or cemetery during this month.

It is comforting to remember that our relatives are not gone from us but before us and one day we will be with them in Paradise.

LIST OF THE DEAD

November is the month when we pray especially for the dead.

November 1st is the feast of all the saints and November 2nd is the Commemoration of the faithful departed.

An important tradition in Ireland is writing down the names of our departed friends and relations on the Altar List of the Dead.  The list is compiled every November and Mass is offered for those on it at all List of the Dead Masses in November and every first Friday for the coming twelve months.

Take time with your family to write the list. Think of family, friends and neighbours over the years. Particularly remember those who have no one to pray for them. Dead lists are available in the church. Please fill one out, if you would like to do so and drop into the Sacristy or the Parish Centre over the coming weeks.
