OUR FAITH CAN SAVE US!

The readings today emphasize the importance of living lives of faithfulness, service and being thankful for the many gifts bestowed on us. In the gospel we hear how Jesus, as he continues his journey to Jerusalem, heals ten lepers. The parable contains much for us to contemplate and reflect upon. Faith, we learn, can be found and seen in many places even where we might least expect it.

Ten people with leprosy cry out to Jesus for help. Having pity on them he heals them all. No doubt all ten were very appreciative but only one, a Samaritan; part of a group not liked by the followers of Jesus came back to him. He wanted to express openly his appreciation, his thankfulness and his faith in the mission and person of Jesus.

All ten of the lepers were blessed with the gift of healing from Jesus but it was the Samaritan who was so touched by Jesus as to proclaim his salvation message to all he met.

We also will find our salvation by recognizing the many gifts and talents Jesus has given us. They must not remain dormant in our lives but let us instead be thankful and grateful for these gifts. Then, pray for a deeper faith and love and a better spirit of service to all around us.

NIGHT OF LIGHT - CELEBRATION OF HALLOWEEN

Halloween means ‘the evening of the Saints’ and while it has been re designated by culture as a night of goblins and gowls, the whole idea of Halloween is the preparation for the great feast of All Saints Day November 1st.

To mark this, there is a party for kids in the Parish Centre, 5.30-7.30pm on Thursday 31st.  October, Fun, food and games, with a little dash of prayer!  Children are invited to come along dressed as…. their favourite Saint!

WORLD MISSION SUNDAY

Next Sunday, 20th October, Pope Francis is asking you and every  catholic Worldwide to come together in celebration of World Mission Sunday. On this very special day, every church, in every parish across our globe will give what they can, no matter how little towards the World Mission Sunday collection. Your contribution will be used to help spread faith, hope and love by supporting overseas missionaries, many of whom work in some of the worlds most impoverished and remote communities.

There will be an exit collection next Sunday to support the missions. Further information can be found on www.wmi.ie

LIST OF THE DEAD

November is the month when we pray especially for the dead.

November 1st is the feast of all the saints and November 2nd is the Commemoration of the faithful departed.

Both feast days remind us that our life on earth will come to its end, and the hope and promise of eternal life with God is there for all of us.

An important tradition in Ireland is writing down the names of our departed friends and relations on the Altar List of the Dead.  The list is compiled every November and Mass is offered for those on it at all List of the Dead Masses in November and every first Friday for the coming twelve months.

Take time with your family to write the list.  Think of family, friends and neighbours over the years.  Particularly remember those who have no one to pray for them.  Dead lists are available in the church.  Please fill one out, if you would like to do so and drop into the Sacristy or the Parish Centre over the coming weeks.

SEEING YOUR LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPEL

The cure of the lepers is not just a physical cure, it also brought the people healed back from exclusion into the community. Perhaps you have experienced the movement from exclusion to inclusion. What was it like for you to be accepted once again when you had felt excluded?

Who were the ‘Jesus people’ for you who brought about this change? For whom, and how, have you been able to do this? Perhaps by healing a rift with a friend, or by listening to the opinion of someone you had dismissed out of hand, or by opening the door to another in some other way?

When we do good for another, we may not do it for the thanks we hope to get, yet it can hurt when no gratitude is shown. How have you experienced the positive effects of thanks given and received?             - John Byrne osa Intercom Oct 19
