IT’S NEVER TOO LATE TO REPENT

The readings today offer us the opportunity to reflect on God’s mercy, love and compassion. A common theme found in all the readings is God’s openness and readiness to receive and welcome us back irrespective of our faults and failings.

Each of the three gospel stories gives us a clear sense of how merciful and compassionate Jesus is towards us all. In spite of our human frailties and stubbornness, the welcoming arms of Jesus remain open to receive us. The compassion and mercy of Jesus is available at all times. Many of us at times can identify with the ‘Prodigal Son’ in the parable but we may not always have his courage, confidence and humility to seek forgiveness and reconciliation. Jesus like the father of errant son will greet us with joy and happiness.

The response of the father to both his sons also provides us with food for thought as it teaches us that the compassion and love of Jesus is extended both to the righteous person and the sinner alike. When we are lost and seek repentance and reconciliation, how could we not rejoice and celebrate as God has made our return very easy through Jesus.

PARISH SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION PROGRAMME

We are now registering children for our Sacramental Preparation Programme. Enrolment forms are available from the Parish Centre.

HARVEST MASS

On Sunday 22nd we will celebrate our Annual Harvest Mass at 11.30am. This celebration has its roots in the Old Testament when God's people gave thanks for the fruits of the harvest. This was a week-long celebration known as the Feast of Tabernacles.

We invite our farming community to share in this Mass of Thanksgiving, and we invite all parishioners to share in their celebration. As usual, we expect a rich display of all the fruits of the earth, and we thank the members of the farming community who work so well to produce a beautiful display.

THE DEEP END

CALLED TO ‘COME TO OUR SENSES’

The three parables of things lost and found emphasise the unending forgiveness of God, and God’s rejoicing for those who return. In each of the situations there is a frantic search for that which is lost and a huge celebration when the lost is found. In the parable of the Lost Son there is much to reflect on. We hear that the younger brother eventually ‘came to his senses.’ We might pray today that God show us the aspects of our lives in which we also need to come to our senses.

In this Season of Creation, we lament the destruction of God’s creation, we reflect on the loss of bio-diversity and the loss of human life caused by climate change. We pray that as a global community we might, like the lost son, ‘come to our senses’ and take the actions that are necessary to change course. It all seems so huge and perhaps we feel there is nothing significant we can do. That is not the case. As parishes, we can lead by example and show our commitment to care for the earth. The future of our environment depends on the action we take now as a society. As with all significant change, it begins with the grassroots.

‘I wish to address every person living on this planet…to enter into dialogue with all people about our common home…The climate is a common good, belonging to all and meant for all.’ (Laudato Si’ 3,23)

Suggestion for the week: Can you encourage your family to make small changes in the home, such as ensuring all waste is correctly recycled, composting, encouraging one another to use public transport or walk/cycle when possible? We start with ourselves., Jane Mellett, Intercom September 2019
