BEING BOTH ACTIVE AND CONTEMPLATIVE!

If you were an employer, you would always hire Martha over Mary! Martha was a diligent and resilient worker. Mary, by contrast, is more contemplative, more discerning, more still. Martha is hyper active and busy. Mary prays, and in our gospel today, she sits attentively at the feet of Jesus - listening, attentive, ready.

As a true disciple, Mary recognises that Jesus has far more to offer her in terms of spiritual nourishment than she or Martha can offer him. Each of us has to find the balance between service of the Kingdom and moments of serious attentiveness to God. Both the active and contemplative dimensions of Christian life are necessary. Getting that right balance is not easy.

O Heavenly Father, may we sit down each day - reading our bibles. May people experience Christ in us! May people experience us as people who are open, enthusiastic, present and who listen to God’s Word. Martha was distracted by activism! May we never be discouraged, distracted or derailed by busyness, activism and productivity! May we spend time in silence, like Mary, listening to, pondering and meditating upon Sacred Scripture.

St Jerome tells us that: “ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ”. May we never ignore Christ, ignore others, and or ignore God’s beautiful Word that sets us free!

21ST INTERNATIONAL SUMMER ORGAN SERIES

The annual series of organ recitals concludes on Tuesday 23rd in the Church of the Assumption at 8.00pm.  “A Transatlantic Alliance: Choir & Organ” will feature the Choir of St James Episcopal Church, Los Angeles, James Buonemani, Director – David Grealy, organ.

WELCOME

We welcome Tony Shannon, who is a clerical student, studying for our Diocese in Rome.  He is on pastoral placement for four weeks.  Please keep him in your prayers and continue to pray for vocations.

CHARITABLE DONATIONS – CHY4 CERTS

All parishioners who donated €250 or more to the parish in 2018 have been sent a CHY4 cert.  When you sign and return them to us we will be able to seek a tax refund of approximately 45% of the total donated.  Thank you to all who have signed and returned their certs and we would appeal to all parishioners to return them as soon as possible.  If you have mislaid your cert and would like a new one issued, please contact Noeleen, the Parish Secretary.

TULLAMORE & DURROW BELLS REPAIR

Work is completed on Durrow church bell with is now functioning properly. The Westminster Chimes at Tullamore church are out of order and it is proposed to have them repaired and to have the Angelus and Mass bell returned to operation. We are placing collection envelopes in the parish churches and the support of parishioners in these projects would be appreciated.

SEEING YOUR LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPEL

Luke 10:38-42

…Many people misunderstand hospitality. They worry and fret about decorating the house and preparing abundant food. Yet sometimes it is something else that is needed to make people feel at home; namely, to sit with guests and to listen to them. What has been your experience of being a cherished guest and when have you been able to make others feel welcome and at home?

We can make the same mistake in relation to people who are important to us: children, friends, parents, or others. We can worry and fret about doing things for them when perhaps the important thing is to give them time and listen to them. What does your experience tell you?...

John Byrne, Intercom July 2019
