WHO IS MY NEIGHBOUR?

The parable in today’s Gospel reading is well known to all of us as the parable of the“Good Samaritan”. In the time of Jesus, the Samaritans were regarded by other Jewsas dangerous renegades, far removed from God and scarcely people careful of the lawand its principles. This was their stereotype—the image that their society had createdand accepted and passed down to their children about all Samaritans. For them to be a

Samaritan was conceptualised as being a bad person. Do we harbour stereotypes inour souls about other people?

The story does not need repeating. The lesson is clear. Our neighbour is all people, extending out from the members of our own families, to those in our parishcommunity and town, and more broadly to those of all kinds—colour, race, nationality, gender, social class in our country and throughout the world. We shouldshow compassion and love to all. Indeed, we must love all these, our neighbours, as ourselves. That’s the hard bit. Can we get rid of our stereotypes of other people andact instead like the Good Samaritan? We could make a start by trying to practise theseven corporal and the seven spiritual works of mercy in regard to our neighbours.

SEEING YOUR LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPEL

Luke 10:25-37

Today’s gospel brings us right to the heart of what a Christian life involves: love of God and love of neighbour. Jesus tells us that having life both now and in the future is the fruit of living in a spirit of love. How have you experienced love given and received as a source of life and vitality?

With media today we are brought face to face with suffering, poverty and hunger so vast that it can engender a feeling of helplessness and hopelessness. The parable challenges us about how we react when we come face to face with a person in need. We may sometimes try to avoid getting involved. Recall when you overcame this reaction and reached out to help. What did that do for you, and for the other person?

Bring to mind the people who have been an inspiration to you by the care and attention they have given to others.

John Byrne, Intercom July 2019

POPE FRANCIS’ EXHORTATION TO YOUTH

Dear young friends, do not let [masters of manipulation] exploit your youth to promote a shallow life that confuses beauty with appearances. Realize that there is beauty in the labourer who returns home grimy and unkempt, but with the joy of having earned food for his family.

There is extraordinary beauty in the fellowship of a family at table, generously sharing what food it has. There is beauty in the wife, slightly dishevelled and no longer young, who continues to care for her sick husband despite her own failing health.

Long after the springtime of their courtship has passed, there is beauty in the fidelity of those couples who still love one another in the autumn of life, those elderly people who still hold hands as they walk.
