Within the week, the samecrowd roars for his death on the cross. People are fickle. Holy Week is one long account of betrayal, denial, fear and abandonment. All of this brings home to us what sin is. When we sin, we turn away from Jesus. We turn away from Him on his journey to Calvary. Yet, the week does not end with the passion and death of Jesus. No, it culminates with the glorious Resurrection of Jesus, the triumph of forgiveness and mercy over sin and death. There is the promise of a bright future for all of us who follow Jesus and He left us the gift of Himself under the form of bread and wine to help us on our journey to everlasting life with Him. This week we could journey with Jesus—make the Way of the Cross. Remember the 5,480 blows Jesus suffered in His Passion. Remember the Sacred Wound in His shoulder from carrying the heavy cross. Profess our sorrow and confess our sins. Venerate the Holy Face of Jesus on Good Friday with the recitation of the Chaplet to the Holy Face. That is the heart of the Passion story. CHRISM MASS: Bus from Parochial House 5.30pm, Wed 17. Cost €10. Leave names in Sacristy. MINISTERS OF HOLY COMMUNION: Rotas for Holy Week Ceremonies now available from Sacristy. FOR CHILDREN BAPTISED IN 2018: Parents & children invited to celebration of the Eucharist on Easter Sunday at 10.00am, to celebrate and remember children’s baptism and entry into the Christian Community during 2018. WHY ARE THE CROSSES COVERED? There is an ancient tradition to cover sacred images in the church in the last weeks of Lent. There are a number of reasons behind this. First of all, we use veils to alert us of the special time that we are in. When we walk into church and notice things are covered, we immediately know that something is different. These last few days of Lent are meant to be a time of immediate preparation for the Sacred Triduum and these veils are a forceful reminder to get ready. Secondly, the veils focus our attention on the words being said at Mass. When we listen to the Passion narrative, our senses are allowed to focus on the striking words from the Gospel and truly enter into the scene. Third, the Church uses veils to produce a heightened sense of anticipation for Easter Sunday. As we move through this Holy Week we remember the words of the psalm “my soul is longing for God, the living God.” Next Sunday we will see him risen and unveiled.
